New Reports Spotlight the State and Future of the MFT Profession

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are essential to addressing America’s growing mental health needs—yet they continue to face significant systemic and structural challenges that impact their ability to serve clients and sustain their work.

To better understand and respond to these realities, AAMFT conducted the 2025 MFT Workforce Study, listening to the experiences of more than 2,000 licensed MFTs, pre-licensed associates, and graduate students nationwide. Their voices reveal a profession marked by resilience, adaptability, and deep dedication—as well as urgent calls for reform.

Now, AAMFT is releasing two new companion reports that share the findings of this landmark study and outline how we are acting on what we’ve learned.

Building on the data and themes uncovered in the first report, this companion publication focuses on AAMFT’s strategic response.
