The Financial Side of Practice Success Starts Here
Building a successful private practice requires more than clinical expertise. For many MFTs, some of the biggest challenges come from the business side of practice—understanding finances, setting sustainable fees, managing expenses, planning for growth, and making decisions based on what the numbers are telling you.
That’s where financial literacy can make a meaningful difference.
In Starting Strong: Foundations for MFT Private Practice, James Childress, CPA, shares his more than 20 years of accounting experience in Financial Literacy for MFTs. As president and founder of CAC Advisors, an accounting firm serving mental health private practice owners and solo practitioners nationwide, James has seen firsthand how thoughtful financial and practice design can help clinicians build sustainable businesses.
Take the emotion out of your financials
One of James’ most important messages is that money is information—not a moral scorecard.
If your financial numbers aren’t where you want them to be, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a practice owner. Your financials simply provide information about where your practice is today—and that information can help you decide what to do next.
“Where you’re at right now is not where your future’s going to be.”
James encourages practice owners to develop a regular habit of reviewing their numbers rather than avoiding them. Looking at your financials month after month helps you recognize what’s changing, identify why something looks different, and make more informed decisions.
Think intentionally about your expenses.
James suggests categorizing expenses as essential, growth-oriented, optional, or unclear. This can make it easier to make decisions when circumstances change. If you need to reduce costs, for example, you’ll already have a framework for determining which expenses are most critical and which might be adjusted.
Practice design is an ongoing process
Financial literacy is just one piece of building a strong private practice. As James explains, successful practices are intentionally designed—and continually redesigned—as they evolve.
“Practice design is ongoing. As your practice grows, the model changes. What worked at 15 sessions may not work at 25 sessions.”
That mindset is at the heart of Starting Strong: Foundations for MFT Private Practice. Rather than treating practice development as a one-time task, the Certificate provides practical guidance for the decisions MFTs face as they establish and grow their businesses.
The Certificate covers essential areas including:
- Financial planning and sustainability
- Practice structure and operations
- Insurance and billing considerations
- Marketing and referrals
- Technology and AI tools
- Long-term growth strategies
Whether you’re preparing to launch your first private practice or already seeing clients and trying to build a stronger foundation, you don’t have to figure out the business side alone.
Starting Strong: Foundations for MFT Private Practice, a new AAMFT Systemic Therapy Certificate, brings together experts who understand the unique realities of MFT practice and provides practical tools you can put to work immediately.
