AAMFT Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to DEI
In a communication shared with members of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) on Friday, January 31, Board President Adrian Blow, PhD, CEO Christine Michaels, CAE, and the AAMFT Board of Directors reaffirmed the association’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI).
“DEI is not just a priority for AAMFT—it is a core value that guides our work and strengthens our community. As systemic therapists, we are uniquely equipped to foster understanding and healing in a diverse and interconnected world. Our training in sociocultural competencies and cultural attunement empowers us to embrace complexity, bridge differences, and create meaningful change. These skills are not only essential to our practice but also reflect the profound responsibility we have as professionals to honor the dignity and value of all individuals.
We understand that the path toward equity and inclusivity is not without challenges, but we firmly believe that these principles make us stronger. They are not separate from our mission but integral to everything we do—whether advancing clinical practice, supporting research, or advocating for the profession. By embracing DEI, we elevate our collective ability to transform lives and communities,” shared the leaders, speaking on behalf of themselves and the AAMFT Board of Directors.
AAMFT’s commitment to these principles is foundationally rooted in its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Statement and is highlighted as a core value of the association in its current strategic plan. In 2022, AAMFT established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Oversight Committee to ensure that DEI remains a long-term priority of the association.
