Minnesota Signs Access MFTs Legislation into Law!
By Advocacy
On Wednesday, May 27, Minnesota became the third state to sign Access MFTs legislation into law in 2026. Governor Tim Walz signed House File 3285 into law after the bill was passed by the legislature on Saturday, May 16.
The Access MFTs language can be found in Article 8 of HF 3825. Under this new law, MFTs applying for licensure by endorsement in Minnesota will be required to hold a full license in good standing in another state, pass a jurisprudence examination, and pay the applicable fee to qualify for licensure.
Throughout the legislative process in Minnesota, the work of local MFT advocates was essential to the success of this legislation.
Minnesota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT) President, Leah Seegar, was a key advocate in advancing this legislation.
“MAMFT recognizes the value of MFTs being able to practice across state lines, support families with members in multiple states, and relocate to Minnesota without jumping through unnecessary hoops to become licensed here,” explained Seegar in reference to the importance of enhanced portability for MFTs in Minnesota.
MFT advocates continue to make a positive impression on legislators and build a better environment for the profession, with bill sponsor Representative Schomaker mentioning the profession positively during his retirement speech.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of MAMFT’s membership, especially our advocacy committee members, as well as our partners: AAMFT, Poul Haas Government Relations, and the Minnesota Mental Health Legislative Network (MHLN),” said Seegar. “We look forward to welcoming more MFTs and continuing the strength of our profession here in Minnesota!”
The new law will go into effect on August 1, 2026. Check back for any updates as enhanced portability is implemented in Minnesota. If you have any questions about the rollout of the new portability process in Minnesota, please contact portability@aamft.org.
