West Virginia Governor Signs Portability Bill
By Advocacy
In addition to bills introduced by our Access MFTs team, AAMFT follows and advocates for portability bills introduced by other entities that accomplish similar goals. In West Virginia this session, Governor Patrick Morrisey introduced SB 458, a portability bill that broadly applies to several professions and eases barriers for out-of-state practitioners moving to the state to become licensed. This bill addresses severe workforce shortages and access to care issues in the state.
“We’re taking a huge step forward to make West Virginia more competitive, attract jobs and workers, and grow opportunities for both current and future residents,” said Governor Morrisey. “Universal licensing will ensure that contractors, electricians, doctors, nurses, realtors, and other skilled workers can move to West Virginia and get to work right away.”
AAMFT member Ashley Niemann was instrumental in MFT support for the bill, meeting with over 16 legislators to advocate for it and other MFT-related efforts. The bill was signed into law and will go into effect July 1, 2025.
