Seeing Clients 65+? Don’t Skip This Step

By MFT Advocacy

As more Americans age into Medicare eligibility, Marriage and Family Therapists are increasingly serving clients who are 65 and older. But many clinicians don’t realize there’s an important administrative step that can directly impact continuity of care: Medicare provider enrollment.

Even if you’re already working with older adults, failing to enroll can create complications down the line. Clients may transition into Medicare coverage while in your care, and without enrollment, you may face difficult decisions about whether you can continue treatment.

Enrollment is not just about billing—it’s about maintaining stability in the therapeutic relationship. When clinicians are prepared, clients don’t experience unnecessary disruptions.

AAMFT encourages LMFTs to think proactively. If serving clients across the lifespan is part of your mission, Medicare enrollment is a key part of making that possible. Find out more about Medicare enrollment at aamft.org/medicare.
