AI Is Rapidly Transforming MFT Practice — But Adoption Remains Thoughtful and Measured

By Communications

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a significant force shaping the mental health professions, and new data from AAMFT’s 2025 MFT Industry Workforce Study shows just how quickly Marriage and Family Therapists are beginning to integrate these tools into their daily work.

AI Is Already Part of Many MFT Workflows

More than half of MFTs are already using some form of AI in their practice:

  • 52% report using AI tools for administrative tasks such as notetaking, scheduling, content summarization, and developing client educational materials.

These tools are helping clinicians reduce administrative load and reclaim valuable time that can be spent on direct clinical care, supervision, and professional development.

Adoption Expected to Soar in the Next Five Years

While current use is significant, the growth ahead is even more striking:

  • 85% of MFTs expect to be using AI tools within the next five years.

This signals a major shift toward more tech-enabled practice environments, where AI becomes a routine support tool for both clinical and administrative functions.

Opportunities and Cautions

MFTs see clear potential in AI to:

  • Reduce administrative burden
  • Support treatment planning
  • Personalize psychoeducation and client resources
  • Enhance efficiency for therapists balancing heavy caseloads

However, adoption remains intentionally cautious. MFTs continue to raise important concerns around:

  • Confidentiality and data privacy
  • Bias within AI-generated content
  • Maintaining professional and ethical standards
  • The risk of overreliance on automated tools

As systemic therapy increasingly intersects with digital innovation, MFTs are weighing how AI can complement, not replace, the relational heart of the profession.
