Access MFTs Update

By Advocacy

On April 7, 2025, Governor Jim Justice signed Senate Bill 458 into law, advancing licensure portability in West Virginia. This legislation allows professionals licensed in other states to practice in West Virginia, supporting the state’s efforts to attract qualified professionals and reduce bureaucratic barriers, which contributes to enhancing residents’ access to essential services.

While West Virginia was not a part of this year’s Access MFTs initiative, its passage aligns with the broader goals of the initiative, which advocates for the expansion of licensure portability for MFTs. SB 458 is a significant step in the right direction, reflecting a growing trend across the country to make it easier for licensed professionals, including MFTs, to move across state lines and provide critical services without unnecessary delays. This supports our vision for greater access to mental health care, especially in regions where there is a shortage of qualified professionals.

The success of SB 458 highlights the ongoing momentum behind licensure portability—a momentum that continues as Access MFTs moves forward with progress in several  Phase 2 states. In Arkansas, HB 1167 has passed both the House and Senate votes; it now heads to the governor for signature. This bill is a significant step forward in expanding MFT access by streamlining the licensure process for professionals from other states. Its advancement reinforces the growing recognition of the need for greater flexibility and accessibility in the mental health workforce.

As we continue our work in Phase 2, we remain focused on introducing and supporting reforms that improve licensure mobility for MFTs, allowing them to serve more clients and provide timely care. Keep an eye on the Access MFTs website for additional updates as we continue working to advance these important legislative initiatives.
