Connecticut and North Carolina Governors Sign Access MFTs Bills into Law
By Advocacy
On June 23, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed H.B. 7081 into law. This bill, championed by AAMFT and the Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CTAMFT), eliminates unnecessary barriers to practice and will allow LMFTs from other states to apply for a Connecticut license by simply verifying their current license in good standing. This new law will take effect on October 1, 2025. AAMFT extends sincere thanks to CTMFT and the many MFT advocates in the state who worked tirelessly to get this legislation passed.
In North Carolina, on July 1, Governor Josh Stein, signed HB 67, which includes Access MFTs language, into law. This law allows out-of-state LMFTs with at least two years of experience to utilize their existing license in good standing to obtain licensure in North Carolina. It takes effect October 1. Previously, HB 67 passed both chambers of the North Carolina legislature unanimously. AAMFT extends great thanks to our Access MFTs partner, the North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (NCAMFT), who championed this bill in both 2024 and 2025.
This continued progress is a major win for both the MFT profession and the clients we serve. For more information on the Access MFTs initiative, visit accessmfts.org.
