2025 MFT Workforce Study: Technology in Practice

By Communications

The COVID-19 pandemic permanently transformed how MFTs deliver care—most notably through the rapid adoption of telehealth. In the 2022 Workforce Study, only about 4% of clinicians expected to return fully to in-person practice—a major shift from pre-pandemic years, when just 4% offered telehealth full-time.

The 2025 study reveals that this technological evolution has endured. Nearly all MFTs now use telehealth in some capacity, and online-only practices have grown by 21% since 2022. The primary reason cited for this continued growth? Expanding access to care.

Still, many therapists view telehealth as a complement—not a replacement—for in-person sessions. Seventy percent of MFTs believe that in-person care offers higher-quality outcomes, particularly in couples and relational therapy.
